メガヒット・ファンタジーの第3作は、監督アルフォンソ・キュアロンに交代し、よりダークでミステリアスな物語と映像が前面に押し出された。ホグワーツ魔法魔術学校の3年目を迎えたハリーだが、彼の両親の死に関わっているという囚人シリウス・ブラックが、アズカバンの監獄を脱獄。ハリーに近づこうとしていると噂が立ち、ホグワーツの周囲を、アズカバンの看守である恐ろしい吸魂鬼が監視する。
原作のエピソードをできるだけ損なわないようにと、かなり駆け足の展開。原作を読んでいない人には、やや目まぐるしいかもしれない。しかし、ロンドンの街を走る「夜の騎士バス」のスピード感、半分馬で半分ワシの魔法生物ヒッポグリフのフライング、魔法使いの村「ホグズミード」の雪景色、そして吸魂鬼の恐怖など、要所での鮮烈なビジュアルには誰もが目を奪われるはずだ。メイン3人のファッションはカジュアル系が中心で、制服の着崩し方にも大人の魅力がチラホラ。ハリーの強い怒りは過去2作には見られなかったほどシビアで、青春ドラマへシフトさせようとするキュアロン監督の意図が感じられる。（斉藤博昭）

今まであまり興味がなくてハリーポッターシリーズは観ていませんでしたが、純粋に面白かったです。

まず夢がある、子供心を思い出せてくれる、クオリティー高い、ストーリーや設定などが面白い、キャラが魅力的、魔法や小道具のデザインなども良い、音楽も良い、などなど。全体的に素晴らしい作品だと思いました。

原作者は昔、苦労をしていて鬱病だった中で執筆したらしいですが、どこかのインタビューでハリーポッターに登場する幽霊や魔物などは、その「闇」との戦いを表現していると語っていた気がします。その観点からもハリーポッターという作品を鑑賞＆考察するとより深い気付きがあるかもしれません。

大人向けの映画も良いですが、最近はこういう夢がある作品にハマって観ています。

魔法が使えない人、マグルに対して容赦なく魔法をかける。
本来であれば罪だが、ハリー・ポッターは罰を受けない。
そして規則は守らず、悪事を働くハリー・ポッターの手に闇の品が渡るのは当然か・・・。
ハリー・ポッターのいたずらは加速する。

魔法の道具。
ヤバすぎる。
透明マントとかもはや悪巧みするにきまってる。
誰がどこにいるかわかる地図。これもやばい。
だって見つかりたくない相手の居場所がわかるんだよ。チートじゃん。ヌルゲー。
そして時を戻すペンダント。
そんなもの存在していいの？
しかも規則を守らないやばい奴らに気軽に渡していいのかよ？ねぇ、先生。
ころころタイムスリップできるものなんですか？
魔法ってやばいわ。

開始早々オープニング演出のためだけに監視付きで禁止されているはずの魔法を使ったり、始まりから僅か5分でおばさんを宙に飛ばして家から飛び出たり、前作でも思ったけどハリポタはのっけから飛ばしに飛ばしてる印象。そしてそのままの風速でラストまで駆け抜けてる。秘密の部屋から引き続き無駄な所なんてひとつもないまさに神作品だった。

好きな箇所はやっぱり逆転時計を使ってから。前回の行動が別視点から見られるってのもいいが、何より一巡目での窮地が二巡目の行動で打破されていくってのが面白い。タイムトラベルものはやっぱりこれがいいね。

ハーマイオニーが急にママみを増したのも実は人より時を重ねてたからって理由があったのも好き。うろ覚えだから自信はないけど原作では確か最高三重に時を重ねていたような……。実年齢で言うと一体いくつになるまで繰り返したんだろうね。今作で急にロンにくっつくようになったのも一人だけ一足先に思春期になったからなのかもと考えると面白い。

守護霊の呪文は実は結構残酷なことを言っていると感じた。呪文の行使に幸せな思い出が必要なこれは非常に難易度が高いらしく、ハリーが失敗したときにルーピン先生が「強さが足りない」と断言したことから察するに、大抵の人はこの呪文に必要な程強度と鮮度を兼ね備えた幸せな思い出がないらしい。

ハリーはこの後のシーンで幸せな未来を夢見てその希望から術を完成させるが、希望なり思い出なり、なんにせよ記憶や感情というのは時を重ねるごとにどうしても薄れていく訳で、でも大抵の人はそれに気付かない。だからある日、ディメンダーに襲われてこの呪文を唱えた時初めて自分の中でその幸せな思い出が消えていってることに気が付く人も多いんだろうなって。そして、まあ、そんな人は、幸せだった記憶と感情が自分の中で消えているのに気付きながら、そこでディメンターに魂まで吸われるんだろうなって……。

死の間際にそれに気づかされながら意識が消えていくなんて、何を考えながら最期を迎えるんだろうね。

今から呪文を習得しますって人も、これは幸せな思い出だって自信をもって胸にかかえていたものを全て試しても足りないとなったらどう思うんだろう。結論、この呪文は常に特大の幸せが増えるような生活をしている人しか繰り出せないんじゃないかな。そりゃ難易度も高いって。特に私みたいな幸せが過去にしかない人間からすると、この呪文は唱えるのも怖いんじゃないかな。それこそ死んだ方がマシなぐらいに。

残念だった箇所は時折マグルの服を着ている点。授業中はローブな辺りお休みだから制服ではなく私服なんですよって話だと思うが、にしても世界観が台無しになってると感じてしまった。特に後半のハーマイオニーはずっと小汚いピンクのパーカーを着てるが、派手な色も相まって悪目立ちして仕方ない。一緒にいるハリーもマグルの服だし、セットでいると余計に台無しになる。
次作の炎のゴブレットでは魔法族はマグルの世界に行くときにしかマグルの服を着ない(だから仮に着るようなことがあってもちぐはぐにしか着られない)って設定があったはずだし、その辺はしっかりして欲しい。

ハリポタも3作目。原作も巻を追うごとに長くなり、2時間半に収めるのはいい加減無理なんじゃないの？と思わされましたが、今作では、クィディッチシーンをディメンター絡み以外はバッサリカットするというまさかの英断。原作では優勝して狂喜乱舞する話があったはずなので、それがなくなったのは残念でしたが、逆にそこを中途半端に入れるのではなく、潔くバッサリカットした結果、本編はだいぶ濃くなりました。特に原作でも不気味な描写はされていましたが、ディメンターがイメージ通りに映像化されてたのが個人的には高評価です。

メインストーリーを中心に追うシナリオになったため、クィディッチ始め授業などの学校生活の雰囲気を感じられなくなってる感はあります。ただ、両立すると映画の尺では中途半端になるので、これはもう監督の英断と言うしかないでしょう。ファイアボルトだけ最後にそれほど乖離しない文脈で出てきたのも良改変でした。

1作目のようなハリポタらしい雰囲気を期待してる人には、ちょっと期待外れかも知れません。が、メインストーリーを追う作品としては潔く出来てると思います。

As I said in my review of the second film, the real problem with Chris Columbus was not that he tried to be faithful to the books, it was that he didn't have the talent to pull it off. So after enduring the crappy 2nd film (which managed to be worse than the book, which itself was not too good), the Potter film franchise is given a much needed shot in the arm thanks to hiring of a real director, Alfonso Cuaron, who, despite still being saddled with that idiot screenwriter Steve Kloves, succeeds where Columbus would have fallen flat on his face.

Perhaps we shouldn't be surprise that the best of Rowling's books proved to be the best of the films.

Which is not to say that the film is not without flaws. The films continue to pointlessly butcher Ron into a stupid, cry baby coward instead of portraying him as the loyal, funny, protective friend that he was in the books, and Rupert Grint's inability to act doesn't help. Exactly why the filmmakers feel they must ruin Ron, and why JK herself allows them to ruin Ron, is unclear. While the original book showed Ron defending Hermione from Snape and, in one of his all time greatest moments, stood up the an alleged killer declaring that he would have to be killed as well if it meant defending Harry, but the first moment is changed to Ron agreeing with Snape after Snape insulted Hermione - which makes no sense following previous events that would have him growing more protective of her, not less, and also screws with the so called romance brewing between them. And who gets to say "If you want to kill Harr you'll have to kill us too!"? Hermione! That's right, once again, Kloves screws Ron while blowing Hermione way out of proportion, apparently unaware that he is ruining the balance between the trio and making it impossible to believe that Ron and Hermione have romantic feelings for each other. The films never portray Hermione and Ron as having a bond that is developing beyond friendship, and despite so called "extra hints" that "foreshadow" their love, Ron and Hermione merely come off as two stupid brats who want nothing to do with each other while lacking the romantic undercurrent that charged up the sparks between Hepburn & Tracy as well as Han Solo & Princess Leia. Do you think that Princess Leia would have fallen in love with Han Solo if Han constantly acted like a stupid, effeminate, inarticulate, weak willed coward who's scared of everything - including his own shadow? Hell no. Han wasn't always gallant, but he was never stupid nor cowardly; he also had the guts and the quick thinking, which in the end is what drew Leia to him. While he's not exactly Beowulf or Hercules, or even Aquaman, what is supposed to make Ron redeeming to Hermione is that he's clearly not as dumb as he occasionally appears to be and he's clearly a brave guy, otherwise, he wouldn't have landed in Gryffindor along with the rest of his family. Sadly, it appears that none of the filmmakers involved here, not even Alfonso Cuaron, easily the best of them, really understand that, and they apparently have no idea of how to portray the relationship between Ron and Hermione; they just expect the audience to go along with it figuring that most of them have read the books, so they put little to no effort into making it believable. They don't even try to include the moments that JK Rowling herself used to demonstrate the ever changing relationship with Hermione & Ron; in fact, they have the nerve to throw out those moments and come up with their own crap, but their crap only comes out as superficial and insincere. Meanwhile, Hermione, as played by Emma Watson, continues to move away from the bookworm we knew in the novel to a shallow, "so cool & charming she's girl power" twit. (Since when does Hermione cackle at Ron, fret over her hair, wear a pink hoodie with a rainbow belt, has the strength of Rocky Balboa that allows her to punch Draco down rather than just slap him, and show up looking dirty blonde instead of frizzy brown?).

Ron deserved better.

Adding insult to injury, while it may not have been intentional on the part of the filmmakers, is that Hermione and Harry, who are presented as sharper and more focused, which is somewhat true even in the books, come across as having much more chemistry between the two of them than Hermione does with Ron, and at the end, they are even shown mocking him, once again throwing the balance of the trio out of whack because we don't see that Hermione also has a tendency to annoy Harry even though they're friends. Maybe Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe just have a natural chemistry with each other, but this also screws with the audiences because the film versions of Hermione & Harry seem to play so well off each other that it seems they are the ones destined to be together, as opposed to Hermione being with Ron (this will also make it even more difficult when trying to sell the audience on the concept of Harry's future romance with Ginny in "Half-Blood Prince"). When Hermione reaches out to a distraught Harry at Hogsmeade and flashes her big brown eyes to him, while Ron keeps his distance, you half expect Hermione to embrace Harry and give him a kiss. When Harry and Hermione are alone in the Forbidden Forest, you half expect Harry to rip Hermione's clothes off and make love to her (their lovemaking would probably be spoiled by the arrival of either the Lupin wolf or the Dementors). I know this probably wasn't intentional, but the filmmakers don't seem to understand that they're giving off the wrong impression to audiences.

Despite these unfortunate changes, star Daniel Radcliffe finally begins to show us just how good an actor he's becoming - he's easily the best of the three, striking the right balance between his serious and light hearted moments without going over the top like his co-stars. Radcliffe works very well with both David Thewlis, in the role of Lupin, and Gary Oldman, in the role of Sirius Black. It's too bad that Radcliffe was not given more of a chance to interact with the new Dumbledore, Michael Gambon, a fellow Irishman chosen to the replace the late Richard Harris, who's life & career sadly ended with the last clunker.

Cuaron's stronger sense of pacing and visual narrative along with characterization also become apparent in his handling of the action pieces and atmospheric moments of fear. I sincerely hope that he returns to direct either the sixth or seventh installment.

Gleich vorneweg: insgesamt halte ich diesen Film für eine gelungene Umsetzung des Buches. Steven Kloves hat die Fähigkeit, die wichtigsten Handlungsfäden und Gedanken auf den Punkt zu bringen. Eine ganz buchgetreue Verfilmung, sagt Kloves zu Recht, würde 16 Stunden dauern. Sicherlich fällt bei nur 2,5 Std. einiges unter den Tisch, was den Buch-Fans (ich gehöre dazu!) persönlich ans Herz gewachsen ist. So hatte ich mich auf Harrys 14 Tage in der Winkelgasse gefreut - aber mal ehrlich, dort passiert wirklich nichts, was tatsächlich für den weiteren Handlungsverlauf ganz wichtig wäre. Und so richtig passte es auch nirgends rein, Harry über die Urheber der Karte des Rumtreibers aufzuklären (großer Seufzer!).
In der filmischen Umsetzung gelingt es Cuaron wunderbar, das einzufangen, was das Teenager-Alter ausmacht: die Welt öffnet sich, es gibt neue Perspektiven, die Teens handeln selbstständiger und individueller. Atmosphärisch umgesetzt in wunderbaren Ausblicken in die schottische Landschaft, durch neue Orte innerhalb Hogwarts, einen erheblich lässigeren Dress-Code, weniger braves und konformes Verhalten, weite Kamerawinkel. Wo bleiben die Zaubermäntel? - Nun, sie gehören zur Schuluniform und wer wie ich längere Zeit in GB verbracht hat, weiß, dass es die Teens kaum erwarten können, sich der Schuluniform so schnell wie möglich nach dem Unterricht zu entledigen. Wer hier Kritik übt, hat vergessen, dass Rowling keine gänzlich mittelalterliche Fantasy-Welt geschaffen hat, sondern eine modernisierte.
Die neuen Charaktere Tante Marge, Stan Shunpike, Ernie und Madame Rosmerta sind alle buchgetreu und treffend dargestellt. Lupin und Black werden hervorragend und überzeugend gespielt. Die Umsetzung der Trelawney als kurzsichtige New Age Wahrsagerin im Hippie-Stil fand ich viel besser als das, was ich mir nach dem Buch unter ihr vorgestellt hatte - und sie befriedigt meinen ganz persönlichen Sarkasmus in Bezug auf so manches New-Age-Geschwafel ungemein (ich darf das sagen, komme selber aus der New Age Bewegung). Den neuen buckligen Tom als Barkeeper fand ich etwas übertrieben, die neue fette Dame aber fand ich großartig.
Vielfach ist moniert worden, dass die Umgebung plötzlich so anders aussehe - nun, sie sieht jetzt endlich so aus, wie sie von J.K. Rowling in den Büchern beschrieben wurde. Mich hat es eher in den ersten beiden Filmen gestört, dass z.B. Hagrids Hütte und der Wald auf gleicher Höhe wie das Schloss lagen oder die Peitschende Weide innerhalb des Schlosses. Der fehlende Hinterausgang in Hagrids Hütte war mir gleich im ersten Film aufgefallen und es war mir damals schon klar, dass das spätestens im Gefangenen von Askaban verändert werden muss. Weitere Pluspunkte: die Karte des Rumtreibers ist genial umgesetzt und der Hippogriff sieht fantastisch echt aus. Die Heulende Hütte kommt auch gut, von Hogsmeade sieht man leider nicht viel. Der "Fahrende Ritter" ist großartig. Über den Schrumpfkopf kann man sich streiten, aber ich finde ihn witzig und Rowling wünschte sich in einem der Interviews, dass sie ihn selbst erfunden hätte.
Dennoch gab es ein paar Enttäuschungen:
Wenn Warwick Davis schon (glücklicherweise) mitspielt, warum dann nicht als der beliebte Professor Flitwick - der hätte den Chor am Anfang doch auch dirigieren können! Der Werwolf ohne Fell sieht für mich absolut lächerlich und jämmerlich aus (obwohl sein Bewegungsablauf sehr gut animiert ist), aber es gab durchaus Kinder im Kino, die auch schon vor dieser Halbversion richtig Angst bekamen. Sirius als animierter Hund sind aus wie eine ausgestopfte Hundepuppe. Was der ganze Zoo bei den Zauberer-Gemälden sollten, ist mir ein Rätsel und deren Lärm fand ich recht nervig. Meine größte Enttäuschung war aber Michael Gambon als Dumbledore. Er mag die leicht verrückte Seite des Dumbledore in den Büchern besser porträtieren als sein Vorgänger Richard Harris, aber ihm fehlt m.E. absolut die vertrauenswürdige Seite. Michael Gambon weist es in einem Interview weit von sich, sich an seinem Vorgänger zu orientieren. Blöde Eitelkeit, kann ich da nur sagen, es hätte ihm nicht geschadet. So wirkt er einfach nur flippig. Vertrauen würde ich dem nie.
Bonus-Material
Wer das Bonus-Material mit den Making Ofs von George Lukas (z.B. Star Wars) oder Herr der Ringe vergleicht, wird natürlich enttäuscht, so ausführlich ist es hier nicht. Dennoch liefern die 10-20-minütigen Beiträge ganz interessante Einblicke hinter die Kulissen, u.a. zu den Dementoren, dem Hippogriff und dem "Fahrenden Ritter".
Die Interviews sind Gruppen-Interviews (z.B. "Die Gryffindors", "Die Dursleys", "Die Slytherins"). Leider lässt der Interviewer vor allem die jugendlichen Schauspieler selten ausreden und wartet auch nicht ab, bis alle die Chance hatten, seine Fragen zu beantworten. Trotzdem erfährt man das ein oder andere Interessante. Witzig ist der Schrumpfkopf, der bei den Interviews mitmischt. Die deutschen Untertitel sind im Großen und Ganzen ganz gut, mit zwei Ausnahmen: als "Neville" interviewt wird, wird ein "signing event" (Autogrammstunde) zu einem "Gesangswettbewerb" (Tippfehler "singing event"?). Und bei den Dursleys berichtet "Onkel Vernon", dass die Kinder "nicht nur ein bisschen Angst" vor ihm haben (not a little scared), was übersetzt wird mit "kein bisschen Angst" (das wäre "not scared a bit" oder "not scared at all"). Aber das ist auch eine trickreiche Feinheit der englischen Sprache.
Bei den rausgeschnittenen Szenen kann ich nur sagen, gut, dass sie rausgeschnitten wurden, Sir Cadogan ist sicherlich treffend dargestellt, aber er nervt mich in den Szenen erheblich mehr als im Buch. Und dass Hagrid versuchen würde, einen Vogel zwischen seinen Händen wie eine Mücke zu zerquetschen, passt nicht zu ihm. Die Spiele: nicht zu viel erwarten, sie haben kein Computerspiel-Niveau, aber mir und meiner neunjährigen Nichte haben sie Spaß gemacht. Allerdings können sie mit einer komprimierten Fernbedienung mit sehr kleinen Tasten, die zu dem manchmal Ladehemmung haben, durchaus zur Herausforderung werden.
